Description: Rare and beautiful three-color glaze in green, blue and burgundy. Dated 1903 in the handwriting attributed to Artus Van Briggle; Design #182 impressed. Roman Numeral III has been reported to indicate clay type. Double-A with the pointed tip the style most often seen in the handwriting of Artus Van Briggle.

Other: J. Emma Kinkead-Gress-McCormick reported that until his death on July 4, 1904; Artus Van Briggle was the only person at the pottery who knew how to affix handles to the pottery. This example would have been produced the first year the design was created in 1903.

In a visit to the Colo. Spgs. Pioneer’s Museum in the 1990’s, I learned about AVB being the only one knowing how to
attach handles at the time of his death, but had forgotten who the source was. Thanks for this information in the “Other” sec., and for your excellent site.
It is exciting to see such a piece as this, with tiny handles, and know that Artus Van Briggle formed the design!
