Design: #209B Bowl mounted in a Bronze 1904 Base
Date Designed: 1903
Designer: Artus Van Briggle
Description: Glaze is a “Granny Smith apple green” with an over spray of red in what appears to have been made with a design overlay or template. Impressed Design#209, and also “B” indicating that this one is larger than the first made. Roman Numeral V for type of clay. Handwriting attributed to that of Artus Van Briggle.
Dimensions: 6 1/4″ height, 7″ width
Other: Bronze base measures approximately 4 1/8″ to 4 3/16″ width. These were made at VBPCo, prior to the 1904 World’s Fair. The inscription in the bronze is attributed to Artus Van Briggle. Rookwood loaned some of their Japanese employees with experience in metal working to assist VBPCo with these designs. They were few made, and very difficult to find!
Design of stencil-like pattern with over spray of red glaze, probably an experiment by Artus Van Briggle.
Collection: Schmidt Collection
Date Designed: 1903
Designer: Artus Van Briggle
Description: Round bowl covered in a beautiful light and dark pink glaze. Bottom markings include the inscribed Double-A, Van Briggle, date of 1903, Roman Numeral III indicating the clay type; and the impressed Design 209D.
Dimensions: 4 1/2″ height, 5″ width
Other: The glaze treatment is probably an experimental by Artus. The top half of the bowl is perhaps a white glaze, with light over spray of pink; blending into the bottom half a darker application of the pink. The bottom of the bowl is the darker pink.
